Case that shook Kerala's conscience: Court to give verdict in Jisha rape and murder
NEW DELHI: The man accused in the Jisha rape and murder case was today found guilty by a sessions court in Kerala s Ernakulam. The case pertains to the brutal rape and murder of Jisha a law student from Perumbavoor on April 28 2016. The chargesheet said that Ameerul killed Jisha when she resisted rape attempt. Islam was the only person accused of murder. He was a native of Assam who had left his home at the age of 10 according to his family. The trial in the case took 85 days. As many as 100 witnesses including 15 migrant labourers were examined by the prosecution which also presented circumstantial evidences before the court against Islam. The prosecution presented as many as 290 documents and 36 material evidences and the defence counsel examined five witnesses. Evidence presented in the court also include results of the forensic and DNA tests conducted on the accused. On April 28 last year Jisha was found murdered in her single-room house on the side of Canal Bund Road at Vattolippady near Perumbavoor. Islam had mutilated the victim s private parts. Islam who left Perumbavoor a day after the murder was arrested by the police from Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu on June 16. Islam in his confession had said another migrant worker Anarul instigated him to commit the crime but police found that Anarul had left Perumbavoor a few months before the murder. Though there was no witness to the murder a neighbour of Jisha had seen the assailant leaving the house. The neighbour later identified ISlam after his arrest. The special investigation team (SIT) had taken more than 30 suspects into custody during probe. The SIT had also interrogated and collected statements of 1 500 persons analysed call data records of over 20 lakh calls verified fingerprints of 5 000 people an examined DNA of 23 suspects.

A 1 500-page chargesheet was submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case on September 17 last year. Islam was booked under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 376 (punishment for rape) 376A (punishment for causing death or resulting in persistent vegetative state of victim) 442 (house trespass) 449 (house-trespass in order to commit offence punishable with death) 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offense or giving false information to screen offender) 302 (punishment for murder) and charges on Dalit Atrocities Prevention Act.
